Jason Berman

Dr. Jason Berman is a pediatric hematologist/oncologist, clinician-scientist, and health research leader whose work spans genomics, rare genetic disorders, model organism biology, and translational innovation. He is CEO and Scientific Director of the CHEO Research Institute, Vice-President Research at CHEO, and Full Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa. For more than 20 years, Dr. Berman has led an internationally recognized zebrafish research program focused on using functional genomics and genome engineering to understand human disease, with particular emphasis on rare inherited disorders. His laboratory has been at the forefront of pioneering CRISPR/Cas9 technologies in zebrafish, developing and applying approaches to create precise models of genetic disease and accelerate the connection between genomic discovery and biological insight. He has also played a national leadership role in rare disease research as the zebrafish lead for the Canadian Rare Disease Models and Mechanisms Network (RDMM) , helping link gene discovery with model organism expertise across Canada. As an institutional leader, Dr. Berman has advanced precision health, innovation, commercialization, artificial intelligence, and cross-sector partnerships at CHEO, including establishing an in-house innovation and commercialization core to bridge academia, industry, and patient impact. His contributions to research leadership and child health innovation were recognized with a King Charles III Coronation Medal awarded by Ontario’s Minister of Health and Deputy Premier, and he brings to Ontario Genomics a perspective grounded in genomics translation, rare disease discovery, technology development, and research governance.
