On 4 April 2001, Genome Canada announced its first investment in Canadian genomics and proteomics research, awarding $135 million to 17 large-scale projects – with applications in agriculture, the environment, fisheries, forestry, GE3LS and health – and five science and technology platforms. Three research projects and two technology platforms were funded through OGI, with a value of $63.1 million (including $18.2 million in funding from Genome Canada).
