Event Date:
25 September 2006

MaRS Discovery District, Toronto

DNA and Diet

More than 125 people attended this open public forum, which OGI presented - in partnership with MaRS and the Canadian Biotechnology Education Resource Centre (CBERC) and with the support of BIOTECanada - to kick off National Biotechnology Week.

OGI's Director of Outreach, Dr. Shane Green, moderated a diverse and engaging panel of speakers, each of whom gave a short talk on various aspects of this burgeoning field prior to engaging in an open dialogue with the audience.

The speakers were

  • Dr. David Castle, Canada Research Chair in Science and Society, University of Ottawa
  • Dr. Ahmed El-Sohemy, Canada Research Chair in Nutrigenomics, University of Toronto
  • Gina Mallet, award-winning author on food
  • Dr. John Webb, Director, Genetics and Science, Maple Leaf Foods, Toronto

Here are just a few examples of what forum attendees had to say:

Good solid variety of perspectives on a current issue - geared towards an educated but not specialist audience.

Comprehensive approach from four different aspects - all delivered in a very articulate manner. Very informative even for a student or non-scientist.

I really enjoyed the presentations and found them to be quite engaging.  The presentations had a substantial amount of information that was presented in a comprehensive manner.
