Job Title: Director of Clinical Informatics, Samuel Lunenfeld Institute, Mount Sinai Hospital
Position summary:
Directs and manages the development and implementation of various informatics programs relating to personalized healthcare. These include software for collecting, storing and mining clinical data within an electronic medical record so as to provide access of data to researchers and to improve the work-flow of patient care; bioinformatic analyses of genomics data; software to interface with various clinical, laboratory, and genetics databases in an effort to integrate data in support of medical decision making.
The Director of Clinical Informatics will manage and lead the Clinical Informatics Group in conducting informatics and statistical analysis of large-scale genomics, biological, and clinical datasets to support Mt. Sinai’s personalized healthcare initiative.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong background in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, Next Generation Sequencing, gene expression, RNA-Seq, ChIP-Seq, and pathway analysis.
- Experience with sequence assembly, alignment, genomic sequence analysis, functional genomics, genotyping, pharmacogenomics, and molecular modeling.
- Experience with managing large datasets, database administration, and programming skills (e.g. SQL Server, Oracle, Sybase, MySQL, CORBA, PERL, Java, C, C++, web scripting).
- Expertise with the UNIX platform.
- Experience with statistical analyses such as regression analysis, classification, cox regression, survival analysis, mixed model, PCA, clustering, power analysis, student’s T-Test, multiple comparison correction.
- Must be able to act as an effective bridge between biologist and computers scientists, particularly during the design of effective tools for data analysis, storage and retrieval.
- Possess the necessary skills needed to effectively filter information and form possible relationships between datasets.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership and strategic direction for all clinical informatics programs related to Mt. Sinai’s personalized healthcare initiative.
- Consults with and serves as an interface with medical staff, researchers, and appropriate committees for the purpose of ensuring coordination in systems planning, development and implementation.
- Conducts assessments of the current informatics environments, synthesizes pertinent information, and identifies implications for planning and development of both clinical and research informatics programs, providing periodic structured environmental assessment and recommendations relative to future direction for Mt. Sinai’s clinical informatics programs.
- In collaboration with administration, and the medical and research staff, responsible for identifying the needs of the clinical informatics programs in the area of computer skills, infrastructure, and competencies in the use of electronic tools for patient care, research, quality management, utilization management, clinical resource management, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Conducts ongoing technology assessment of medical information systems and products, related to identifying and meeting patient needs, clinical programs, research initiatives, and potential external collaborations.
- Conducts research in genomics and health care informatics. Disseminates findings at major national meetings and in published peer-reviewed journals.
- Responsible for overall planning, development, and implementation of health care informatics programs, products and services, particularly to address the clinical needs of patients, physicians and researchers, and to support the practice of personalized medicine.
- Responsible for assessing training and development needs of clinical and research staff in relation to electronic development of programs, products and services.
- Provides expert support to other departments in the development of clinical information systems, products and services responsive to current and future needs
- Advises on all issues related to access and interface.
- Tracks and advises on industry standards for clinical and research needs.
- In collaboration with appropriate staff, advises on prototype development, coordinates/conducts prototype, alpha and beta testing.
- Assists in communicating results of prototype development to vendors and appropriate staff.
- Serves as liaison with the staff and departments for the purpose of integrative program development with other programs and services of Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute.
- Assists in developing product specifications including the application and functionality of hardware and software programs, software vendor requests for proposals, recruitment of vendors and evaluation of vendor's work.
- Assists in monitoring vendor's adherence to specifications, quality and effectiveness of vendor support.
- Collaborates with the leadership and departments in the development of new and enhanced Web-based programs. Serves as the primary liaison for related activities and the overall integration of programs and products with hospital-wide electronic activities.
- Responsible for budget and staffing for clinical IS application
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Position qualifications and requirements
Professional/technical:
MD or doctoral level education required. Extensive managerial experience in an academic setting. In depth knowledge and experience in computer use in hospitals.
Extensive knowledge of current medical information technology and applications. Knowledge of RFP and grant development.
Analytical:
Must possess strong program development skills in order to develop innovative clinical informatics.
Control:
Must have demonstrated capabilities in developing collaborative approach to program development. Establishes policies and procedures, supervises installation of programs.
Communication:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential to provide technical, medical and educational leadership to all staff. Must be able to communicate effectively the capabilities and limitations of information technologies.
