Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation

Ontario

Premier Dalton McGuinty established the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI) in 2005, and its current Minister is the Honorable Glen Murray. The government wanted MRI to reflect its understanding that research and innovation are crucial to the province’s economic future and to the health and well-being of Ontarians. It supports and capitalizes on stellar research and development to generate socio-economic impact.

The provincial government, through MRI’s Ontario Research Fund (and predecessors), has provided almost 15% of the resources for the genomics projects in OGI’s portfolio.

MRI (and its predecessor ministries) and Genome Canada have together covered OGI’s operating costs.  MRI looks to OGI to leverage Ontario’s investment in genomics research with funding from other national and international sources, to identify and cultivate new projects that relate to Ontario’s strategic priorities, and to increase awareness of and delivery on the potential impact of these projects.
