Genome Canada

GenomeCanada

Genome Canada is a not-for-profit organization, established in February 2000  to develop and implement a national strategy for supporting large-scale research projects in genomics and proteomics,  for the benefit of all Canadians.

With funding from Industry Canada, and in partnership with (and among) the OGI and five other regional genome centres across Canada, Genome Canada has made  this country a leader in research in genomics  and proteomics relating to  agriculture, environment, fisheries, forestry, human health, new technology development, and the economic, environmental, ethical, legal, and social issues (GE3LS) that  these efforts  engender.

Over the past eight years, Genome Canada has invested in more than 130 research projects and science and technology platforms through the regional genome centres. Co-funding from commercial partners, philanthropic organizations, provincial governments, regional genome centres, and other sources has more than doubled the total research investment to over $1.5 billion.

Genome Canada and the Ontario government have shared OGI’s operating costs.  As with the other regional centres, Genome Canada looks to OGI to cultivate and provide (or assist in finding) co-funding for potential projects and to provide program management oversight of projects that it funds. Genome Canada has provided approximately half of the funding for the genomics projects in OGI’s portfolio.

OGI also works closely with the other regional genome centres, and partners with them on individual research projects and program planning as the opportunities arise:
